Your router has one job, or so you have always assumed: move data in and out of your home. In 2026, that assumption is quietly out of date. The same radio waves that carry your Netflix stream can also map the movement of every person in the house, and a growing number of routers are being built to do exactly that.

The technology is called Wi-Fi sensing, and it is no longer a lab curiosity. It is being written into the Wi-Fi standard itself and shipped as a marketed feature. Understanding what it can and cannot detect is becoming part of basic digital literacy, in the same way understanding cookies once was.

How a router “sees” without a camera

There is no lens involved, which is precisely what makes it unsettling. A Wi-Fi signal fills a room and reflects off every surface, including your body. When you move, you disturb those reflections, and the router can measure the disturbance. Software turns that raw interference into a picture of motion.

The effect works through walls, in the dark, and without you carrying any device at all. A camera needs light and a clear line of sight. Wi-Fi sensing needs neither, which is the entire point of its appeal and the root of its privacy problem.

The benign uses are easy to sell. A mesh system that turns the lights off in empty rooms, or alerts a family member when an elderly relative has a fall, is a genuine good. The same sensor pointed at a different question becomes a record of when you wake, when you leave, and how many people slept in the house last night.

The privacy question nobody is asking

Cameras and microphones come with social baggage. You can see a lens, you cover it with tape, and most people know to be wary of a smart speaker. Wi-Fi sensing arrives with none of that instinctive caution, because there is nothing to see and nothing in the room that looks like a sensor.

That raises three questions worth pressing your hardware maker on:

  • Where does the motion data go? Processed on the router and discarded, or uploaded to a company server and stored?
  • Who can request it? Occupancy records are exactly the kind of data that gets pulled into insurance disputes, custody battles, and law enforcement requests.
  • Can you turn it off? If sensing is baked into the firmware, an off switch is not guaranteed, and a guest in your home never consented to being mapped at all.

What you can do about it

The first move is awareness, because you cannot manage a feature you do not know exists. When you buy or rent a router, check whether it advertises motion sensing, presence detection, or anything described as “home awareness.” If it does, read how the data is handled before you switch it on.

Look for the setting in the companion app, where it is often enabled by default, and turn it off if you do not use it. Favour systems that process sensing data locally rather than in the cloud. And if you are in a rental with a building-supplied router, ask the landlord directly whether sensing is active, because that is a question they are increasingly going to have to answer.

The bottom line

Wi-Fi sensing is one of those technologies that is too useful to disappear and too invasive to ignore. The fall detection that protects a grandparent and the occupancy log that maps your daily routine are the same feature wearing different labels. The deciding factor is not the technology, it is who controls the data it produces. For now, the safest assumption is that your router can sense more than it lets on, and the burden is on you to find the off switch before someone else finds a use for what it sees.
