Why Apple’s All-Glass iPhone 20 Might Run Hotter Than Your iPhone 17

Render leaks are free. Anyone with Photoshop and a Weibo account can draw a bezel-free iPhone and call it a scoop. Factory retooling is not free. When a leaker starts talking about production lines being stripped out and rebuilt, someone is spending real money on machinery months before anyone has confirmed the phone even exists. That is the leak worth paying attention to, and that is the one we just got.

The Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital says the supply chain facilities for the so-called “iPhone 20” have finished their renovations and are now just waiting for the machining to start. In other words, the “will it be glass” question may already have been answered by the people quietly buying the equipment to build it.

What the Leak Actually Claims

Here is the substance, stripped of the hype.

Fixed Focus Digital reckons Apple’s preferred approach for the anniversary iPhone is a return to a full glass build, with manufacturing quality landing somewhere around the first-generation iPhone Air. The relevant facility has already been renovated and is now waiting on machining to begin. No supplier was named, which is the frustrating bit, but there’s an obvious candidate. Lens Technology makes iPhone cover glass and previously took over the metal-frame and glass-back assembly plants from Catcher Technology. If anyone is retooling a line for a glass anniversary iPhone, they are the smart bet.

None of this contradicts what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has been saying for over a year. Gurman’s line is that Apple wants a “mostly glass, curved iPhone without any cutouts in the display” for the 20th anniversary, with a launch pencilled in for September 2027. The supply chain chatter is just the boring, expensive proof that the glossy render rumour has an actual factory behind it.

Why “factories are ready” doesn’t mean “phone is nearly done”

Quick reality check, because headlines like this get misread constantly.

Apple’s iPhone production doesn’t hit full-scale manufacturing until a matter of weeks before launch. For the iPhone 17, trial production kicked off in June with full-volume output targeted for August, roughly a month before the September release. So “the factories are ready” for a phone launching in autumn 2027 is not a sign that assembly is imminent. It’s early-stage retooling, the kind of groundwork Bloomberg has already said Apple is ramping up as it develops the redesign.

Think of it as Apple laying the track, not boarding the train. Useful signal, wrong to read it as a countdown.

The contradiction nobody is flagging

Right, here’s the part that makes this interesting, and it’s sitting in plain sight if you’ve been following the same leaker.

Back in May, Fixed Focus Digital pushed back hard on a rival claim that Apple was exploring liquid metal or a fancy new titanium alloy to replace aluminium on the Pro models. Their argument was blunt: aluminium is the only practical choice right now because of the heat generated by on-device AI processing. This month they doubled down, saying aluminium mid-frames are going to be used in straight-edge phones for a long time to come.

So the same source telling you the iPhone 20 goes glass is also telling you aluminium is thermally essential. Those two claims are in tension, and here’s why it matters.

On the iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro, the aluminium unibody is not just the skeleton. It’s part of the cooling system. Apple pairs a vapor chamber, a sealed pocket of water that boils and condenses to move heat around, with an aluminium alloy chassis that has roughly twenty times the thermal conductivity of the titanium it replaced. The vapor chamber spreads the heat, and the aluminium body dumps it out into the air. That metal shell is the radiator.

Now here’s the problem. Glass is a thermal insulator. It’s genuinely bad at shifting heat compared to aluminium. And AI is exactly the workload that makes this a headache, because running a local language model on your phone is a sustained load, not a quick burst. The chip sits hot for minutes at a time while it indexes your photos and predicts your next tap. That’s precisely the scenario the aluminium radiator exists to handle.

So if the anniversary iPhone wraps itself in glass on the back and curved glass on the edges, where does all that AI heat actually go?

The Get-out Clause, and Why it’s Plausible

Fixed Focus Digital left themselves an escape hatch, and it’s a reasonable one. They specified aluminium for straight-edge phones. The iPhone 20 is the curved-edge one. Different rules.

The likeliest answer is that Apple keeps an internal aluminium or metal mid-frame doing the thermal heavy lifting, then wraps a glass shell around it for the look. You get the single-slab aesthetic on the outside and the radiator you need on the inside. Combine that with a bigger, smarter vapor chamber and Apple could plausibly have its glass cake and cool it too.

Plausible is not confirmed, though. Nobody has shown how a mostly-glass, curved, cutout-free iPhone dissipates a sustained AI load without either throttling harder or getting uncomfortably warm in your hand. Until someone does, treat the glass-back claim as a design intention with an unsolved engineering question attached, not a done deal.

Where This Actually Stands

To keep you grounded, here’s the solid stuff versus the speculation.

Reasonably solid: Apple is targeting a mostly-glass, curved, anniversary iPhone for autumn 2027 (Gurman), and the supply chain is being prepared for a material change (Bloomberg, plus this week’s leak). It’ll arrive after the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2, which are expected in the spring.

Still speculative: that the back is definitely glass rather than a glass-over-metal hybrid, that Lens Technology is the supplier, and that Apple has fully cracked the thermals. The naming is also still a coin toss between iPhone 19, iPhone 20 and something else entirely.

The honest summary is that the aesthetic ambition is real and increasingly well-funded, but the hard engineering question, how you cool a glass phone running AI all day, hasn’t been answered in public yet. Apple has a habit of solving exactly this kind of problem quietly and then acting like it was never in doubt. I’d bet on them doing it again. I’d just like to see the receipts first.
