A fresh leak claims to reveal the battery capacities of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, and at first glance the numbers are a bit of a letdown. The increase over the iPhone 17 Pro is small. Really small. But before you write off this year’s battery story, there is an important catch that changes the whole picture.
Let’s break down what leaked, what it actually means, and why a tiny capacity bump might still translate into noticeably better battery life.
What the Leak Says
The numbers come from Digital Chat Station, a prolific Weibo-based leaker with a solid track record on Apple supply chain details. According to the leak, Apple is testing the iPhone 18 Pro with two different battery capacities depending on the region, just like it did with the iPhone 17 Pro:
- China model: roughly 4,056 mAh
- U.S. model: roughly 4,288 mAh
If you are wondering why the same phone gets a different battery depending on where you buy it, there is a simple explanation, and it comes down to the SIM tray.
Why the U.S. Model Gets a Bigger Battery
Apple ditched the physical SIM tray on U.S. iPhones starting with the iPhone 14, going all-in on eSIM. iPhones sold in China, on the other hand, have kept the tray (the one exception being the iPhone Air, which is eSIM-only everywhere, China included).
That little tray takes up internal space. Remove it, and Apple has a bit more room to work with, which it uses to squeeze in a slightly larger battery. That is the entire reason the U.S. eSIM model edges out the Chinese version.
The Year-Over-Year Gains Are Tiny
Here is where the disappointment kicks in. Stack the leaked figures against the iPhone 17 Pro and the increases are barely there:

It is a different story for the bigger phone, though. Back in February, Digital Chat Station claimed the iPhone 18 Pro Max would push into the “5,000 mAh” range, with around 5,000 mAh for the China version and roughly 5,100 to 5,200 mAh for international models. So if you want the meaningful capacity jump this year, it looks like it is reserved for the Max.
Why a Small Number Does Not Mean Small Battery Life
This is the part that matters, so stick with me. Battery capacity and battery life are not the same thing, and a modest capacity gain does not automatically mean a modest endurance gain.
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to run Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process. A more efficient chip sips less power for the same work, which directly extends how long the battery lasts. On top of that, the Pro models are likely to get Apple’s C2 modem, which could bring its own efficiency improvements.
In other words, Apple could deliver longer real-world battery life this year even while barely touching the raw capacity numbers. Efficiency gains do a lot of heavy lifting that a spec sheet does not capture.
One Big Caveat
Treat all of this as unconfirmed for now. It is not clear whether these figures come from a regulatory database or from supply chain information about test samples, and leaked battery numbers can shift before a device is finalized. As always with pre-launch leaks, the smart move is cautious interest rather than firm conclusions.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to land in September, alongside a smaller Dynamic Island, a simplified Camera Control, and an upgraded main camera with a variable aperture. We will know the real battery story soon enough.
