Apple previewed iOS 26 last month at WWDC with new features like Liquid Glass and revamped Message backgrounds, promising a public release this fall. Developers have had access to early builds since June, but the first public beta, the version available to everyone, still hasn’t landed.
That might be about to change.
Beta Release Could Happen This Week
Apple historically releases the first public beta of each major iOS version in early to mid-July. As of today, July 23, we’re already well into the back half of the month, and the public beta for iOS 26 remains unavailable.
But the wait might not last much longer.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is targeting a release “around” July 23, which could mean any day now, likely Thursday or Friday. If so, testers could begin exploring iOS 26’s new features before the weekend.
If You’re Installing the Beta, Do This First
It’s worth repeating: This is still a beta, not a final release. Battery life might take a hit, apps may crash, and stability isn’t guaranteed. If you’re planning to install the iOS 26 beta, use a secondary device.
Even better: wait a few days after release to see what issues early testers report before jumping in yourself.
Compatible Devices Only
Apple’s hardware cutoff is firm this year. iOS 26 only supports iPhones with an A14 chip or newer. That means iPhone XR, XS, and iPhone 11 owners are officially left behind.
If your iPhone is older than the iPhone 12, the update simply won’t install, even if you’re registered for the Apple Beta Software Program. The page will fail to load. Apple isn’t bending on compatibility this time.
What Comes Next
Once the public beta arrives, expect a steady rollout of updates over the summer. Apple typically releases new beta builds every 1–2 weeks leading up to the final version in September, alongside the iPhone 17 launch.
And if Apple Intelligence ends up being the flagship feature, as expected, this beta cycle could be one of the most closely watched in years.
