Apple’s big shiny new Siri AI is finally here, but before you get too excited, there is a catch you have probably already guessed. It only runs on devices that support Apple Intelligence, which means a decent chunk of perfectly good hardware is sitting this one out. Here is exactly what makes the cut.
iPhone
On the iPhone side, you need a 15 Pro or newer. The full list is:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16e
- iPhone 16
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
- iPhone 17e
- iPhone 17
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 17 Pro
- iPhone 17 Pro Max
Notice the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are nowhere to be seen. Only the 15 Pro and Pro Max squeak in from that generation, which is the usual Apple Intelligence story. The chip is the gatekeeper, not the year.
iPad
iPads are simpler. If it has decent silicon, it is in:
- iPad mini (A17 Pro)
- iPad Air (M1 chip and newer)
- iPad Pro (M1 chip and newer)
Mac
Macs get the easiest rule of the lot. Siri AI works on any Mac with the M1 chip and newer. If you have bought a Mac in the last few years, you are almost certainly fine.
Apple Watch
The Watch is a bit different, because it leans on your phone to do the heavy lifting. Siri AI works on the models below, but only when they are paired with a nearby Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone:
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
- Apple Watch SE (3rd generation)
Vision Pro
Both Vision Pro models are supported:
- Vision Pro (M2 chip)
- Vision Pro (M5 chip)
CarPlay
There is a bonus here too. Some Siri AI features carry over to CarPlay when you connect an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone to your car, so the upgrade follows you onto the dashboard, at least in part.
The catches you actually need to know
A few important things before you start planning your week around the new Siri.
It is launching in English only to start with, and you will have to join a waitlist before you can use it, which we covered separately. Siri AI is available to test in the iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 developer betas from today, with the Apple Watch joining in a later watchOS 27 beta. Public betas land in July, and the full release arrives later this year. Even at that point Apple is keeping the “beta” label on it, so manage your expectations accordingly.
And the big one for anyone reading this from across the Channel. Siri AI will not be available in the EU on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 at launch, with Apple pointing the finger at regulatory issues tied to the Digital Markets Act. So if you are in the EU, you are waiting longer than the rest of us, which is frustrating but sadly nothing new.
