If you finished Severance season 2 and your brain’s still spinning, you’re not alone. That finale left fans with a ton of questions — and everyone’s been waiting to find out what happens next to Mark S. and his crew inside (and outside) Lumon.
The good news? Severance is officially coming back for season 3. Here’s everything we know right now about Apple’s biggest sci-fi hit, from new writers to filming dates and when it might finally return to Apple TV+.
Severance Season 3 Officially Greenlit by Apple

Apple didn’t waste any time on this one. Right after season 2’s finale aired, the company confirmed that Severance had been renewed for another season.
Honestly, it wasn’t much of a surprise. The show’s been a massive hit for Apple — even bigger than Ted Lasso when it comes to fan buzz and critical praise.
But here’s the cool part: the creative team behind Severance didn’t sit around waiting for Apple’s approval. They’d already started writing the next chapter before the renewal was even official.
So yes, season 3 is a go, and it’s already deep in development.
New Writers, New Energy Behind Season 3
In February, Ben Stiller (the guy who directs and produces the show) told The Hollywood Reporter that work on season 3 was “underway,” with a full writers’ room already going strong in Los Angeles.
But that’s not the whole story. Behind the scenes, Severance has had a few creative shake-ups.
According to Puck, there were some disagreements between series creator Dan Erickson and writer-producer Mark Friedman during the show’s first two seasons. So Ben Stiller brought in someone new to help steer things forward, Beau Willimon, the creator of House of Cards and co-writer of Andor.
Willimon didn’t just come in for season 3, though. He also helped clean up the final stretch of season 2, which had ballooned in cost (some episodes reportedly hit $20 million each).
It sounds like season 3 will have more of his fingerprints on it, which could mean a slightly different tone, but still the same mysterious, mind-bending vibe we love.
Ben Stiller Won’t Be Directing This Time
Ben Stiller has been the creative heart of Severance, directing more than half of all its episodes so far. But in season 3, that’s changing.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Stiller confirmed that he won’t be directing any episodes this time around.
Why? He’s busy working on a new film project that’s taking up most of his schedule.
Don’t worry, though, he’s still involved as an executive producer and will stay hands-on with the show’s direction (just not literally behind the camera).
Filming Starts in Spring 2026
We finally have a clue about when Severance season 3 will start shooting.
Actress Patricia Arquette recently revealed that production is set to begin in spring 2026.
For comparison, season 2 began filming back in October 2022 and didn’t premiere until January 2025, a pretty huge gap.
Most of that delay came from the big Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes, which paused filming for months. With those now over, season 3’s production should (hopefully) go more smoothly.
When Will Severance Season 3 Be Released?
If you’ve been following Severance since the beginning, you know waiting is kind of part of the experience.
The gap between seasons 1 and 2 was nearly three years. But Ben Stiller has said he doesn’t want fans to wait that long this time.
Still, with filming not starting until 2026, there’s no way the new season will premiere in the same year.
Realistically, we’re probably looking at a mid-to-late 2027 release on Apple TV+.
That might sound far away, but it makes sense when you factor in a few months for filming (each episode takes about a month to shoot) and another half-year or so for editing, music, and visual effects.
What To Expect When It Returns
No spoilers here, but after season 2’s wild ending, expect season 3 to dig deeper into the mysteries behind Lumon, the innies, and the outies.
With Beau Willimon helping shape the story, we could see even more political and emotional twists, similar to what made House of Cards and Andor so intense.
And while Ben Stiller won’t be directing this time, the show’s eerie tone, tight writing, and amazing cast should keep things feeling just as sharp.
