Season 1 of Drops of God debuted with a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. That kind of critical consensus is almost impossible to sustain. Now, with Season 2 officially out, the streak is over.

The new season currently sits at 83% on the Tomatometer, and while that’s still very strong, it marks a noticeable shift from the show’s flawless debut.

Critics still like it. Just not unanimously.

Early reviews make one thing clear: Season 2 isn’t a collapse. It’s a continuation that takes bigger swings, and not all of them land for everyone.

Diana Keng of TV Fanatic gave the season a perfect score, calling it “an ambitious new vintage” that deepens the show’s emotional and sensory storytelling. Decider’s Maddy Casale echoed that sentiment, praising the show for raising the bar with richer character work, cultural blending, and even more emphasis on memory and emotion.

Variety’s Alison Herman put it neatly, saying the series becomes “more multifaceted and mature with age.” Meanwhile, The Times (UK) awarded Season 2 four out of five stars, describing it as “about as brilliantly French as you can get.”

That’s the praise side.

Where the cracks start to show

Not every critic was fully convinced.

LeisureByte’s Archi Sengupta gave Season 2 a 3.5 out of 5, noting that while it remains intense and engaging, it occasionally “misses the charm of the first season.” The lone negative review so far comes from ScreenAnarchy’s Peter Martin, who felt the new season was more obviously constructed and that some of its narrative mechanics became frustrating as the story progressed.

In other words, Season 2 pushes harder. And when you push harder, some people push back.

The Rotten Tomatoes numbers, so far

On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 2 currently holds:

  • 83% Tomatometer score, based on six critic reviews
  • No official audience score yet, with fewer than 50 user ratings submitted

For context, Season 1 finished with:

  • 100% Tomatometer score from 27 critics
  • 93% audience score from over 250 ratings

That’s a high bar for any follow-up.

Big expectations come with a price

Drops of God was created by Quoc Dang Tran and stars Fleur Geffrier, Tomohisa Yamashita, and Stanley Weber. Season 1 wasn’t just well reviewed, it was beloved. That kind of reception creates expectations that are almost impossible to meet twice.

Season 2 appears to be doing something riskier: expanding themes, deepening characters, and leaning harder into its metaphor-heavy storytelling. For many critics, that’s exactly what makes it compelling. For a few, it makes the seams more visible.

Either way, an 83% score is still a win. It just isn’t perfection.

Season 2 of Drops of God premiered on Apple TV+ on January 21, 2026, and if the reviews are any indication, this is a season that rewards patience, even if it doesn’t please everyone equally.
