We just got the clearest look yet at Apple’s first foldable iPhone, and it comes with an interesting twist: the device may launch in a single color, white. Leaker Sonny Dickson has shared detailed images of a foldable iPhone dummy unit that appears to show a finalized design, and it is the most revealing glimpse of the device we have had so far.
Let’s go through what the dummy shows, the new design details it reveals, and why a white-only launch would actually be very on-brand for Apple.
First, What a “Dummy Unit” Actually Is
Quick bit of context, because it matters for how seriously to take this. Dummy units are non-functional models built mainly for display and, crucially, for accessory makers. Case manufacturers need a physically accurate model so they can mass produce cases and accessories before a device is even announced. That means dummies tend to be highly accurate on dimensions and external design, even though they do nothing when you press the buttons.
Dickson first shared early-production foldable dummies back in April, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, giving us our first real visual confirmation of the foldable’s passport-style shape. This new one is a big step up in detail. Earlier this week, leaker Ice Universe posted what looked like a white foldable dummy, but Dickson’s unit gives a much clearer view of both the design and the display.
The Design Lines Up With Everything We’ve Heard
The good news for rumor watchers is that this dummy matches the broader pile of leaks rather than contradicting it. The foldable is expected to use a book-style, passport-shaped design with a 4:3 aspect ratio, making it wider than it is tall and unlike any foldable currently on the market. The outer display comes in at 5.5 inches, while the inner OLED panel measures 7.8 inches, which would make it just slightly smaller than an iPad mini when opened up.
The rest of the rumored hardware picture holds up too: an ultra-thin 4.5mm titanium frame, volume buttons moved to the top edge, no Action Button, Touch ID instead of Face ID, and a horizontal dual-camera array sitting in an iPhone Air-style camera plateau on the back.
The New Details This Dummy Reveals
Here is where it gets fun, because this model surfaces several things we had not clearly seen before:
- The cover display is edge-to-edge and slightly curved at the edges, which should make the folded device feel more like a modern, conventional iPhone in the hand.
- The camera flash sits below the rear microphone within the camera plateau.
- The rear microphone has a new look, made up of five drilled holes.
- The inner display’s front-facing camera is in the top-left corner, which almost certainly has implications for how the Dynamic Island works on that larger screen.
That last point is the one worth keeping an eye on. A camera placed in the top-left of the inner display suggests Apple has had to rethink the Dynamic Island layout for the foldable form factor, and it is exactly the kind of detail that shapes how the software actually feels to use.
The White-Only Rumor
Now to the color story. Dickson’s observation backs up a report from Friday, in which Weibo leaker Instant Digital suggested there may be no black finish at all, with white potentially being the only option. That tracks with earlier reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who said Apple planned to avoid bold colors and stick to traditional finishes for this device.
A single-color launch might sound stingy, but it is squarely in line with how Apple handles its big, generationally significant products. The Apple Watch Ultra and Vision Pro both launched with just one color option. And if you go further back, the iPhone X arrived in November 2017 in only two finishes, Silver and Space Gray, at a then-record $999 starting price. The iPhone XS added Gold a year later. So if Apple does launch the foldable in white only, expect it to expand the palette over time rather than out of the gate. Limited color choices are a feature of Apple’s premium-launch playbook, not a bug.
When and How Much
The foldable iPhone is expected to be announced in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The price is the part that will sting: Gurman has said the starting price will cross the $2,000 threshold, which would make it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold.
One color, an eye-watering price, and a form factor unlike anything else on the market. Whatever else it is, Apple’s first foldable is not going to be boring.
