Apple shook up the iPhone lineup this year with the introduction of the new iPhone Air and some of the biggest design tweaks we’ve seen in years. But if the leaks are right, that was just the warm-up.
Next year could bring something entirely new, a foldable iPhone that could redefine the lineup and introduce a brand-new name: iPhone Ultra.
Here’s why Apple’s next flagship might go Ultra, and why that name could actually make perfect sense.
1. ‘Ultra’ Makes More Sense Than ‘Max’
Apple has a small but growing problem with the word “Max.” It used to mean the biggest, most powerful, most everything. But with the foldable iPhone expected to pack an even larger display than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, that name starts to lose meaning.

After all, what’s bigger than Max?
Well, in Apple’s world, Ultra.
You can already see this in Apple’s chip lineup: M3 Pro → M3 Max → M3 Ultra. The Ultra is the top-tier model, the absolute best Apple makes. And if Apple’s foldable iPhone is positioned above the Pro Max in performance, price, and prestige, calling it iPhone Ultra fits perfectly.
It’s more aspirational, more premium, and just plain cooler than “Fold.”
2. Apple Doesn’t Follow – It Redefines
Apple hates being predictable. When the rest of the industry called their headsets “VR,” Apple launched Vision Pro, calling it a “spatial computer.”
When everyone talked about “AI,” Apple rolled out Apple Intelligence.

So if you’re expecting the company to call its first foldable the “iPhone Fold” like Samsung or Google, don’t hold your breath. That’s not Apple’s style.
The company won’t frame its foldable as just another gadget that bends, it’ll be something entirely new, likely designed to show that this isn’t a gimmick, it’s the next evolution of the iPhone itself.
And “Ultra” instantly communicates that this is beyond anything Apple’s done before, not just another category, but the top of the mountain.
3. The Price Will Be Ultra Too
Here’s the part that might sting a bit: the rumored price.
Early reports suggest Apple’s foldable could start at $2,000 or more. That’s nearly double the base price of the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.
But that’s exactly why the Ultra name matters.
Apple has used naming psychology before, the Apple Watch Ultra, for example, debuted at $799, almost twice the cost of the standard Series 8, and yet it sold like crazy. Why? Because the “Ultra” label justifies the premium.
If Apple launched a $2,000 “iPhone Fold,” it might sound excessive. But a $1,999 iPhone Ultra? Suddenly, it feels designed to be that expensive, the best of the best, no compromises.
And that’s classic Apple marketing.
The Bigger Picture
Apple doesn’t release new iPhone categories lightly. Every shift, from Plus to Pro, from Air to Max, has signaled a bigger strategy. The rumored iPhone Ultra would be the next logical leap: a new flagship tier that sits above everything else.
If it happens, expect Apple to frame it as the future of the iPhone lineup, not a spin-off, but a statement.
A foldable that’s thinner, lighter, and smarter than anything we’ve seen before. A phone that doesn’t just bend, but redefines what an iPhone can be.
And honestly? “Ultra” feels like the only name bold enough for that.
