iPhone Duo: Apple’s Foldable Reportedly Isn’t Called Ultra, And It Costs Less Than Expected

Apple iPhone Duo in Star White and Night Sky

Every leak for the past two years pointed at iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. Apple went with neither.

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg emptied his notebook on the eve of the event, and the headline detail was the name. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is called the iPhone Duo. Two screens, two halves, one fairly literal piece of branding. Confirmed on stage, exactly as reported.

It is a more Apple choice than it first sounds. The company has never been shy about naming a product after the obvious thing it does, and after a decade of Pro, Max and Plus suffixes, Duo at least tells you something about the hardware rather than where it sits in a price list.

Why “Duo” Actually Makes Sense

This is the first iPhone with both an inner and an outer display. Everything about the device is defined by that pairing: two panels, two usage modes, two devices in one pocket. Ultra would have implied a halo model sitting above the 18 Pro Max. Duo implies a different category altogether, which is closer to what Apple appears to be building.

It also leaves the Ultra name free. Apple has used it on the Watch and on Mac silicon, and it would be very Apple to hold it back for a future generation once the foldable stops being an experiment and starts being a flagship.

The Price Is $1,999, And Apple Is Eating Some Of The Cost

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, exactly as Gurman had it. That is the price of two iPhones, which fits the branding neatly, but it is also well below what several analysts had been forecasting. Figures north of $2,400 had been circulating for months. The ladder runs to 2TB, and the top configuration is $3,199.

The interesting part is why. Memory component prices have climbed sharply this year, and Apple is reportedly absorbing part of that increase rather than passing it on. That is a deliberate decision to keep the Duo competitive against Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line rather than pricing it as a curiosity for early adopters.

That $1,999 is the US price before sales tax, so what you hand over depends on your state. Apple had not published UK pricing at the time of writing, and a straight currency conversion rarely survives contact with its regional adjustments, so we are not going to guess at a number. The UK store usually fills in within the hour of a keynote ending.

Colours: Star White And Night Sky

Two options at launch, and Apple gave them proper names: Star White and Night Sky. Close enough to the white and dark blue that was reported, and it settles the earlier reporting that had it arriving in white and nothing else.

It is a restrained palette for a device that is otherwise Apple’s biggest hardware swing since the original iPhone, though a two-colour launch line-up is fairly standard for a first-generation product. Apple tends to widen the range once manufacturing settles.

Release Date: 23 October, Not September

Here is the detail worth planning around. Pre-orders open Friday 16 October at 5am PT, and the Duo goes on sale Friday 23 October in the US and more than 70 other countries, with another 28 following on 30 October. That is later than the September on-sale window most of the earlier reporting assumed.

That puts it five weeks behind the iPhone 18 Pro, which pre-orders on 12 September and ships on the 18th. A staggered launch is not unusual for a genuinely new product line, and it gives Apple room to manage yields on a display and hinge assembly it has never mass-produced before. It does mean anyone hoping to walk out of an Apple Store with one this month is going to be disappointed.

Apple Pencil Support Is Coming, But Not At Launch

One late addition, and it half held up. Apple confirmed the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C on both displays, but not at launch: the company says later this year. This had previously been filed under considered but unlikely. Our full iPhone Duo specs guide has the detail.

It is a small line in the reporting with fairly large implications. Pencil support signals Apple sees the unfolded inner display as a genuine work surface rather than a bigger screen for scrolling, and it moves the Duo a step closer to the iPad mini territory it will inevitably be compared against.

What Else Apple Announced

Alongside the Duo came the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, both a $100 rise, plus the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and AirPods 5. iOS 27 arrives on Monday 14 September. Everything, in the order it happened, is in our live blog of the event.

The questions the keynote did not answer are the ones that will decide whether the Duo works. Crease visibility. Hinge durability after a year in a pocket. Whether Apple has built real multitasking for the inner display or simply scaled up the phone interface. Battery life in a body that thin, with two panels to drive, is the other open question. None of that gets answered until reviewers have had one for a fortnight.

A $1,999 foldable that Apple is subsidising to hit that number tells you the company is serious about volume rather than prestige. Whether the software is ready for it is the thing nobody can answer from a keynote stage.

Would You Buy One?

Is $1,999 low enough to tempt you into a foldable, or does a 23 October ship date and a first-generation hinge make this one to skip until version two? And is Duo a name you can live with, or should Apple have gone with Ultra after all? Let us know in the comments.
