The Split Launch Strategy
This is the change that affects everyone, so it is worth understanding first. With the iPhone 18 generation, Apple is splitting up its release timing.
The pricier iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max launch in fall 2026 as usual, right alongside the new foldable iPhone. The more affordable iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, however, will not arrive until spring 2027.
What that means in practice: if you want to upgrade on the normal fall schedule, you are buying a Pro (or the Fold). If you want to save money, you are waiting until spring. Apple is effectively making the fall launch a premium-only event, which is a notable shift in strategy.
Design
Do not expect a dramatic redesign here. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to keep the same general look as the iPhone 17 Pro, including the triple-lens rear camera system and the large camera plateau.
A few smaller design notes worth flagging:
- The Ceramic Shield area used for MagSafe charging could be “slightly transparent,” though it is not clear yet what that actually looks like in practice.
- The front could change, with either a slimmed-down Dynamic Island or, in some rumors, no Dynamic Island at all. A few reports suggest a hole-punch cutout in the top-left corner, but the more reliable chatter currently points to a smaller Dynamic Island rather than its removal.
- The iPhone 18 Pro Max might be a touch thicker at 8.8mm (up from 8.75mm), which would push the weight past 240 grams compared to the 233 grams of the 17 Pro Max. That difference is small enough that most people will never notice it, and some rumors say there is no thickness change at all, so treat this as unsettled. Separately, leaked dummy units suggest the Pro Max camera plateau grows to 11.54mm thick (up from 11.23mm on the 17 Pro Max), with the total lens region reaching around 13.77mm.
- Apple may drop the two-tone look from the 17 Pro. The back glass has reportedly been updated to minimize the color difference between the glass and the aluminum frame, giving a more unified finish.
- Despite ongoing complaints about durability, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to keep the anodized aluminum finish from the 17 Pro.
Colors
This is where it gets fun. Multiple rumors point to a deep red finish, and it is expected to be Apple’s standout special color for 2026.
According to Macworld, the shade is closer to a dark cherry with a tinge of purple than a straightforward dark red. The rumored lineup pairs it with light blue, dark gray, and silver. Here are the specific Pantone codes Apple is said to be testing:
- Dark Cherry (Pantone 6076): the headline new color
- Light Blue (Pantone 2121): similar to the current iPhone 17’s Mist Blue

Those same four colors have already shown up in the first leaked iPhone 18 Pro dummy models, which adds some weight to the rumor. The leaks have since gone far deeper, with a cyberattack on Apple supplier Tata Electronics spilling confidential component documents onto the dark web.
Sizing
Nice and simple. Apple is not expected to change the display sizes, so you are looking at the same 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max as the current generation.
Display
There are two main stories here, and one of them is a bit of a disappointment.
No under-display Face ID. Earlier rumors suggested Apple might move the TrueDepth camera under the display, and a leaked prototype image even appeared to show a Face ID sensor beneath the screen. More recent information, though, says the technology simply is not ready, so under-display Face ID is not happening this round.
A smaller Dynamic Island (probably). Even without under-display Face ID, Apple still plans to shrink the Dynamic Island so it takes up less space. Leaker Ice Universe claims it will be 35 percent narrower than the iPhone 17’s version, with the widget shrinking to around 13.5mm from 20.7mm. CAD renders that surfaced in May also depict a slimmed-down island. The caveat: Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station claims the 18 Pro will not get a smaller Dynamic Island at all, and that the change is actually delayed to the iPhone 19. So this one is still up in the air.
Better display tech. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to use upgraded LTPO+ technology, reportedly supplied by Samsung and LG, which should be more power efficient than the LTPO panels in the 17 Pro.
Camera
This is where the iPhone 18 Pro could earn its upgrade, and it is reportedly the start of a four-part camera upgrade plan from Apple.
- Variable aperture main camera. The big one. A variable aperture would let you manually control how much light reaches the sensor, cutting down on overexposure and opening up new options for lighting and depth of field. This is real creative control, not just a spec bump.
- A new three-layer stacked image sensor. At least one of the 18 Pro models could use a new Samsung-developed sensor that makes the camera more responsive, reduces noise, and increases dynamic range.
- Larger apertures on the Main and Telephoto lenses. More light in poor conditions means less noise, faster shutter speeds, and better background separation. Apple is specifically testing an updated telephoto with a wider aperture.
- A possible teleconverter. Apple is reportedly considering a teleconverter to pair with the variable aperture lens. Teleconverters extend the effective focal length and improve zoom reach, though they reduce light intake. It is not yet clear how Apple would actually implement this in a phone, so file it under “interesting but unconfirmed.”
A20 Chip
The iPhone 18 Pro models and the foldable iPhone are expected to use Apple’s A20 chip, built on TSMC’s 2nm process. This is a genuinely meaningful jump.
- The move to 2nm packs more transistors into the chip, with rumored gains of up to 15 percent faster performance and 30 percent better efficiency versus the A19.
- The A20 will reportedly use TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging, though it is unclear if that is limited to the higher-end models. With WMCM, the RAM is integrated directly onto the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine instead of sitting beside the chip. The benefits could include faster Apple Intelligence performance, longer battery life, and a smaller chip footprint that frees up internal space for other components.
There is a catch, though, and it is the cost. TSMC has reportedly told Apple that 2nm chip pricing will be at least 50 percent higher than 3nm, thanks to manufacturing and equipment costs. That expense could keep the 2nm chips restricted to the high-end models. Some rumors say Apple will only make a high-end version, while others suggest a split, with an A20 for the iPhone 18 and an A20 Pro for the iPhone 18 Pro.
C2 Modem
Apple’s in-house modem effort continues with the next-generation C2, expected to be more capable than the current C1 and C1X and closer in performance to the Qualcomm chips it is replacing. A few highlights:
- Possible mmWave 5G support, which the earlier Apple modems lacked.
- A privacy-focused Limit Precise Location setting.
