Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is now just weeks from its expected September reveal, with the phone already in mass production, and the latest reporting suggests it will finally ship three features that have spent years stuck in the rumour mill. None of the three is new to the leak cycle. What is new is that all of them appear to be arriving at once, in the same phone.
The three upgrades, a variable aperture main camera, a noticeably smaller Dynamic Island, and Apple’s second-generation in-house C2 modem, have each been reported repeatedly across multiple product cycles. Their convergence on the iPhone 18 Pro makes this year’s Pro model less a set of fresh surprises than a delivery date for promises Apple watchers have been tracking for a long time.
Variable Aperture Camera Finally Arrives
The longest-running of the three is the variable aperture camera. The Information first detailed Apple’s work on the system more than two years ago, and at the time reported that the iPhone 17 was the target model. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo later corrected that timeline, saying the feature was set for the iPhone 18 line instead. The most recent reporting backs Kuo, indicating variable aperture is indeed coming, specifically to the Main camera. The significance is that a variable aperture lets the phone physically change the size of the opening that light passes through, rather than relying on a single fixed aperture as every iPhone has to date. That opens the door to greater creative control over depth of field and low-light performance, though exactly how much benefit reaches users will come down to Apple’s implementation, which will not be clear until the full feature reveal in September.
Dynamic Island Shrinks for the First Time
The second upgrade addresses a piece of iPhone design that has barely changed in years. Apple first cut into the iPhone display with the notch on 2017’s iPhone X, and did not revisit it until the Dynamic Island arrived on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. Four years on, that cutout is finally getting smaller, though it is worth remembering how often these Dynamic Island rumours have moved.
Rumours point to a Dynamic Island roughly 35% smaller than the current design on the iPhone 18 Pro, reclaiming display space at the top of the screen. There has already been an indirect hint from Apple itself: Siri’s redesigned look in iOS 27 appears to have been built around the smaller cutout, a detail leakers were quick to spot.
Apple’s C2 Modem Replaces Qualcomm in the Pro
The third upgrade marks another step in one of Apple’s longest-running hardware projects. The company’s in-house modem effort had been an open secret for years before the first Apple-designed modem, the C1, shipped in an iPhone last year. Now reporting indicates the iPhone 18 Pro will move away from Qualcomm modems entirely in favour of Apple’s next-generation C2 chip.
The C2 is expected to bring speed improvements over the earlier C1 and C1X, alongside the efficiency and privacy advantages Apple has attached to each of its own modem designs, a line it backed up when it tightened C1 security in iOS 18.5. Better efficiency in particular feeds directly into battery life, one of the areas the iPhone 18 Pro is rumoured to push hardest this year.

Two of them, the C2 modem and the variable aperture camera, are hardware changes buyers will feel rather than simply see, while the smaller Dynamic Island is the most visible year-over-year design change the Pro has had in some time.
Whether any of this is enough to justify an upgrade is a separate question, and one that depends heavily on which iPhone a buyer is coming from.
