We are about two months out from Apple unveiling the iPhone 18 Pro, and the rumour mill has settled on three design changes that are likely to land badly with a chunk of the people queuing up to buy one.
None of them are dealbreakers on their own. Stacked together, though, they paint a picture of a phone going in a direction plenty of buyers have been quietly asking Apple not to. Thicker, heavier, and possibly missing the one colour a lot of people actually want.
It Is Getting Thicker, Probably
This is the one the leakers cannot agree on. Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital reckons the iPhone 18 Pro line could be around 2mm thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro. Both current Pro models sit at 8.75mm, so that rumour would push the new phones out to roughly 10.75mm, which is a genuinely noticeable jump.
Ice Universe lands somewhere gentler, reporting the iPhone 18 Pro Max at around 9mm. And then Macworld throws in a proper curveball, claiming the body stays put at 8.75mm and it is the camera bump that gets chunkier instead. So the phone might be thicker, or the camera might be thicker, or both. Pick a lane, everyone.
It Is Getting Heavier
The weight rumours are a lot more consistent. Instant Digital and Ice Universe both peg the iPhone 18 Pro Max at roughly 240 grams. That does not sound like much until you line it up: the iPhone 17 Pro Max is 233 grams, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max was 227 grams. Two years, and the heaviest iPhone keeps getting heavier.
Nobody has put a firm number on the smaller iPhone 18 Pro yet, but it is expected to gain weight too. It currently sits at 206 grams. The trend is clear, and it is pointing up.
There Might Still Be No Black
This is the one that will sting the most. The iPhone 17 Pro shipped in cosmic orange, deep blue and silver, and pointedly not in black or dark grey. For a lot of buyers, a Pro phone that does not come in black is a non-starter, and Apple heard about it.
For a while it looked like Apple had listened. Early rumours had the iPhone 18 Pro arriving in four colours: dark cherry, light blue, silver and black. Then a fresh leak this week trimmed that list to three, dropping black entirely and leaving dark cherry, light blue and silver. If it holds, that is two years running without a black Pro iPhone.
So How Worried Should You Be
Not very, honestly. The thickness and weight both trace back to a bigger battery, which is the sort of compromise most people happily take once the phone is in their hand. Seven grams is not something you notice. All-day battery life is. The question worth more of your attention is whether any of this justifies upgrading from an iPhone 17 Pro, and the short answer there is no.
The colour question is the one genuinely worth grumbling about, because that is pure choice on Apple’s part, not physics. We will know for sure in September. Until then, treat all of this as the usual pre-launch leak soup: mostly right, occasionally wrong, and never quite final until Tim Cook holds the thing up on stage.
