Okay so here’s something interesting that just dropped about the iPhone 18 Pro, and honestly it’s the kind of upgrade that’s going to fly under the radar but actually matter way more than people think.
According to a new report from The Elec, Apple is moving the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max over to LTPO+ display technology. Same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes as last year, nothing wild on that front, but the panels themselves are getting a real glow-up under the hood.
Wait, what’s LTPO+ and why should I care?
Quick refresher first. LTPO is the tech that lets your iPhone do things like ProMotion and the Always-On Display. It’s why your phone can drop down to 1Hz when it’s just sitting there showing the time, then crank all the way up to 120Hz when you’re scrolling. That dynamic refresh rate magic? Yeah, that’s LTPO doing its job.
LTPO+ is the next step up. Here’s the technical bit straight from the report:
“Conventional LTPO applies oxide materials to switching thin-film transistors (TFTs). LTPO+ extends oxide usage to driving TFTs as well, enabling finer current control for OLED light emission and allowing displays to optimize operation based on surrounding conditions and user environments, improving battery efficiency.”
In normal human terms? Better battery life, and a smarter display that actually adjusts properly to what’s around you. Two wins for the price of one.
The two things you’ll actually notice
The report breaks down two real benefits coming with this upgrade:
- Better power efficiency, which translates to longer battery life
- More responsive display adjustments, especially in low-light environments
That second one is actually huge. If you’ve ever noticed weird flickering or that grainy look when you’re using your phone in a dark room or in bed at night, LTPO+ should help clean that up. The Always-On Display should also be more efficient, which has been a battery drain complaint since day one.
The supply chain drama
Now here’s where it gets spicy. The Elec says Samsung and LG are basically going to be making all the iPhone 18 Pro panels this year. BOE, who was a key supplier for the iPhone 17 Pro, just didn’t make the cut.
Why? Per the report:
“Industry sources cited BOE’s lower-temperature polycrystalline oxide-plus (LTPO+) technology capability as a key reason for the setback. Compared with Samsung Display and LG Display, BOE is said to lag in both panel quality and manufacturing yield.”
Translation: BOE couldn’t keep up on quality or volume. That’s a pretty rough loss for them considering how big of a get the iPhone 17 Pro contract was.
What about the iPhone Ultra?
The Elec doesn’t say whether the rumored iPhone Ultra is getting LTPO+ as well. That one’s still a question mark, but it would be weird if Apple’s most expensive phone of the year didn’t have its best display tech.

Look, this is exactly the kind of upgrade I want to see Apple making.
