Apple is just weeks away from revealing the iPhone 17 Pro, and while most of the specs are already expected, a new rumor hints at three unexpected, and potentially game-changing camera upgrades.

A New Tip Surfaces

According to MacRumors, an anonymous source has shared details allegedly based on a commercial currently being produced for the iPhone 17 Pro. The production company in question has a public working relationship with Apple, though the tip remains unverified.

While rumors like these should always be treated with caution, some of the claims are intriguing enough to be worth watching.

The Three Claimed Upgrades

Here’s what the tipster says is coming:

  1. An 8x Telephoto Zoom Lens
A significant jump from the current 5x zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the new telephoto camera would reportedly offer variable optical zoom with the ability to move between focal lengths, something more akin to professional camera systems.

  2. A Dedicated Pro Camera App
This would be a first for iOS. Apple could finally split its camera experience into two apps: one streamlined for everyday users, and another aimed at creators and pros with more advanced manual controls and video options.

  3. A New Camera Control Button
Perhaps the most surprising claim is that Apple might add an entirely new physical button on the top edge of the iPhone 17 Pro, dedicated to camera functions. Details are unclear, but it’s said to complement the existing Action Button.

What’s Likely, What’s Not

It’s smart of MacRumors to present this rumor as unverified. Historically, hardware leaks like a new physical button or an upgraded lens system tend to leak months, or years, in advance. That makes the new button the least likely of the three claims, especially since case manufacturers haven’t indicated changes like this.

That said, an 8x telephoto upgrade isn’t out of the question. Apple’s competitors, including Samsung and Huawei, have already pushed the limits of periscope zoom, and Apple is under pressure to keep pace.

The most believable part of the rumor? The Pro Camera app. Back in April, leaker Jon Prosser mentioned that Apple is planning a native multicam recording feature exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro. And with iOS 26 already streamlining the default Camera app, it makes sense for Apple to spin off a more advanced experience for pros.

Apple has long tried to make a single camera app that works for everyone. But as features pile up, it’s getting harder to balance ease of use with pro-level control.

What’s Next

If true, these upgrades could further cement the iPhone 17 Pro’s position as Apple’s most creator-focused iPhone yet. Expect final confirmation when Apple announces the iPhone 17 lineup, likely in early September.
