What Happens to iPhone 17 Prices the Day the 18 Is Announced

Apple cuts the outgoing iPhone’s price while the keynote is still running. The store goes down before the event, comes back up an hour later, and the iPhone 17 has a new number next to it.

That cut is the smallest one you will see all autumn. The price of an iPhone 17 falls across five separate channels on five different timetables, and knowing which one moves when is worth a couple of hundred pounds to anyone who is not in a hurry.

Day Zero: Apple’s Own Cut

Historically Apple reduces the previous generation by $100 in the US, or the equivalent locally, and prunes the lineup at the same time. The oldest models disappear from the store entirely rather than getting cheaper.

This year has a twist. With no standard iPhone 18 arriving until spring 2027, the iPhone 17 is not being replaced. It is being promoted into the affordable slot for the next six months, and Apple has less reason to discount a phone it needs to keep selling at volume.

Do not assume the usual $100. A smaller cut, or no cut at all on the standard iPhone 17, is a real possibility this cycle.

Days 1 to 3: The Used Market Reacts Fastest

Private resale prices move within hours of the keynote, and they move furthest. Anyone planning to sell an iPhone 17 privately to fund an 18 Pro should have listed it before the event, not after.

Two things hit at once. Supply spikes as upgraders dump their old phones, and demand falls because buyers now know a newer model exists. The drop on recent-generation phones typically runs 10% to 15% in the first week.

Apple’s trade-in grid moves in the same direction on roughly the same schedule, which is why locking your quote before the keynote is the single most valuable thing you can do in late August.

Weeks 1 to 3: Retailers and Carriers

This is the window most buyers should target. Third-party retailers hold iPhone 17 stock they need to move, and they are not bound by Apple’s pricing the way they were during the launch period.

Expect another 5% to 15% below Apple’s revised price from major electronics retailers, deeper on the configurations nobody wanted. Carriers move at the same time, usually as increased trade-in credit or bundled accessories rather than as a lower sticker price, because their business model prefers to hide the discount inside a contract.

Check the total cost over the contract term rather than the monthly figure. A carrier offering a bigger discount over 36 months instead of 24 is charging you more and showing you less.

Weeks 4 to 8: Apple Refurbished

Apple’s refurbished store starts listing the outgoing generation in volume about a month after launch, as launch-window returns are processed and resold.

This is the best-value route and hardly anyone uses it. Apple refurbished iPhones come with a new battery, a new outer shell, the full one-year warranty and AppleCare eligibility, at 15% or so below the new price. The only thing you give up is the box.

Stock is unpredictable and moves quickly on popular configurations. Check weekly rather than waiting for a notification.

The Scenario Where Prices Go Up

Memory costs have risen sharply through 2026 and they affect every phone Apple builds, including the ones already on sale. Apple raised Mac and iPad prices earlier this year for exactly this reason.

We flagged in June that the iPhone 17 could get more expensive rather than cheaper in some markets, and currency movements have already pushed iPhone prices up in Japan outside the normal launch cycle.

Combine that with reduced iPhone 17 production and no successor until spring, and the usual assumption that last year’s phone gets cheaper is less safe than it has been for a decade.

What to Do

Selling an iPhone 17? List it before the keynote. Every day you wait after the announcement costs you money, and the trade-in grid reset is not something you can appeal.

Buying one? Wait three weeks past the keynote and buy from a retailer, or wait five and check Apple refurbished. Buying on keynote day means paying Apple’s price cut and none of the others. We have gone through whether the iPhone 17 is the right buy at all this year, given how the lineup has changed.

Everything above starts moving on 8 or 9 September, most likely.
