Early signs point to Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup being a stronger hit than last year’s iPhone 16 series. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, initial demand for the new models is running higher year over year, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max emerging as the clear star performer.
Kuo’s analysis is based on two factors: estimated production volumes in Apple’s supply chain and how quickly shipping times slipped after preorders opened. Both suggest that demand for at least three of the four models is ahead of where Apple stood a year ago.
iPhone 17 Series Demand Tracking Ahead

Kuo notes that total production for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Pro, and standard models is up about 25 percent compared to the iPhone 16 lineup at the same stage last year. Despite that increase, shipping estimates have only pushed out by roughly one week. That’s a strong signal, he says, that first-weekend demand for the iPhone 17 series is higher than the iPhone 16.
Pro Max Sales Shine

The strongest clue comes from the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Kuo believes Apple’s production volume for the device is around 60 percent higher than the 16 Pro Max was at this point last year, yet delivery times remain in line. That suggests Apple has ramped supply significantly, but demand is keeping pace, pointing to the Pro Max as the breakout model of this cycle.
The Pro Max is also the device Apple has leaned into the most with its new hardware story. With a larger battery, upgraded cooling system, and professional-grade camera features, it has become the default choice for content creators and those upgrading from devices two or three years old.
A Question Mark Around iPhone Air

Not all of the models are showing the same trend. The iPhone Air, Apple’s new thin and ultra-sleek entry in the lineup, is still available for day-one delivery. Kuo says this could be because Apple produced roughly three times as many Air units as it did of the 16 Plus, the model it replaces in the lineup. That makes it harder to read demand from shipping times alone.
Kuo suggests waiting until after the initial launch period to get a clearer view. The iPhone Air represents a new category for Apple, sitting between the standard models and the Pro line. Early availability doesn’t necessarily mean weak sales, it could simply reflect higher output.
In closing
The early takeaway is clear: Apple’s iPhone 17 series is performing well out of the gate, with the Pro Max leading the way and overall preorders trending higher than last year. Whether the iPhone Air ultimately resonates with buyers will become more obvious in the weeks ahead.
Apple officially launches the iPhone 17 lineup on September 19, with the Pro Max already shaping up to be the model most in demand.
