Apple gave the entire iPhone app icon set a makeover with iOS 26 last year. So you would think they would leave it alone for a while. Nope. iOS 27 is back with another round of changes for loads of app icons, and the good news is these look like a proper fix rather than just change for the sake of it.
If you remember the chatter during the iOS 26 cycle, plenty of people reckoned the new Liquid Glass icons looked a touch blurry, especially at smaller sizes. That complaint clearly landed at Apple HQ, because the iOS 27 icons go the other way. Apple describes them as “sharper and more detailed,” and for once the marketing line actually holds up when you look at them.
To my eyes they sit in a really nice middle ground. They keep the glassy Liquid Glass character that iOS 26 introduced, but pull back some of the clarity and definition from the older iOS 18 versions. It is the best of both, basically, and it is the look iOS 26 probably should have shipped with in the first place.
The changes hit a big chunk of Apple’s own apps, with only a handful left untouched. So once you install iOS 27, your home screen is going to look noticeably different even before you start poking around at the actual features.
There is one more change worth flagging, and it might split opinion. The shimmering effect that iOS 26 added, the one where icons caught the light and shifted as you tilted your phone around, is gone in iOS 27 beta 1. Completely removed, as far as anyone can tell. Some people loved that little flourish, others found it distracting, so whether this is a win or a loss really depends on which camp you were in. Personally I will not miss it, but I can see why fans of the effect might grumble.
The developer beta is already live, so if you are the adventurous type you can see the new icons for yourself right now. Just remember it is an early beta, so expect a few rough edges elsewhere.
