If you’re the kind of person who’s ever wanted to mix a cowboy hat with a crying face or slap sunglasses on a waffle emoji, you’re not alone. Gboard’s Emoji Kitchen has quietly become one of the most entertaining tools on your phone, and now it’s getting a slick new upgrade.
With the rollout of Gboard 15.1, Google’s making it way easier to browse and mash emojis together thanks to a brand-new “Browse” feature, now landing on more Pixel devices after months in beta.
Let’s break down what’s new and why this update is worth your attention.
Wait, What’s Emoji Kitchen Again?

If you’re not familiar, Emoji Kitchen is basically Gboard’s way of letting you mash up two emojis into a custom sticker. Want a flaming ghost? A heart-eyed dinosaur? An angry croissant? Done.
It’s been around for a while, and people have been using it to add a bit of chaos (and creativity) to their conversations. But up until now, finding the right combo sometimes felt like… guesswork.
The New “Browse” Feature Makes Everything Way Simpler
Previously, if you wanted to cook up emoji mashups, you had to try random pairs and see what stuck. But with this new Browse interface, all the combos are laid out for you.
Here’s how it works:
- Open up Gboard in any text box
- Tap the emoji button, then scroll through the Emoji Kitchen bar
- At the end, instead of a tiny settings icon, you’ll now see a grid icon or arrow
- Tap it, and boom, you’re taken to a full-screen browser of every emoji mashup Gboard currently supports
You can even tap on one to see which two emojis made it, and hit Send to drop it straight into your chat.
Quick Picks and Recent Combos? Yup, That Too
Google also added a slick floating action button in the bottom-right corner of the Browse view. Tapping it brings up your normal emoji picker, including recent emojis and categories, and when you select an emoji, Gboard will immediately show you all the mashups that use it.
It’s faster. It’s smoother. And if you’ve ever wasted five minutes trying to find the right “grinning cat with explosion eyes” combo, this is a huge win.
Who’s Getting It?
Right now, this upgrade is exclusive to Pixel devices, including phones and the Pixel Tablet, as part of the stable Gboard 15.1 update. If you’ve got a Pixel and you’re not seeing it yet, try updating Gboard from the Play Store. Otherwise, it should roll out to everyone soon.
Non-Pixel users? Unfortunately, still out of luck for now.
Final Thoughts
Gboard’s Emoji Kitchen is already one of those “why is this so fun” features and with the new Browse update, it’s actually useful too. Whether you’re texting a friend, roasting someone in a group chat, or just spamming hearts with goat heads, this new layout makes it faster than ever to find the perfect sticker.
Honestly? This might be one of the most lowkey great features Google’s rolled out all year.
