Alright, this is one of those small changes that’s actually kind of a big deal. With iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple is using variations of the same wallpaper artwork across every platform. First time it’s ever done that.
So What Changed?
In the past, pretty much every platform shipped with its own look. Your iPhone, your Mac, your iPad, all doing their own thing. This year they’re all running the same design, and it has a name: Celosia.
It’s a set of sweeping, overlapping curves with soft shadows, the kind of thing that looks like layered flower petals or folded paper depending on how you squint at it. In Light mode you get warm sandy gold melting into soft purple. Dark mode flips it to moody deep indigos with silvery-blue edges. And like the macOS wallpapers, those curves quietly form a stylized “27,” so the design is tied right to the software version. Nice touch.
How It Breaks Down Per Platform
This is where it gets a little more involved, because each platform handles Celosia slightly differently.
iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 get the full spread. There are three variants: a standard version, a Dynamic one, and a Color one. Each comes in its own Light and Dark versions, and they’re optimized separately for the Home Screen and the Lock Screen.
macOS 27 Golden Gate ships with dynamic wallpapers, but here’s the catch (same as before): those only work inside the OS itself. You can’t just yank them out and use them elsewhere.
CarPlay is the surprise one. The first developer beta packs in 14 Celosia options. You get Light and Dark modes across Grey, Purple, Red, Teal, Blue, Brown, Dark Blue, and Green, plus a Hero option in both Light and Dark. That’s a lot of choice for a screen you’re mostly glancing at while parked.
The Takeaway
It’s a subtle move, but it’s the kind of thing Apple loves. One visual language tying the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and your car together so it all feels like part of the same world. Whether you care about wallpapers or not, that’s the direction they’re clearly pushing.
