Apple TV+ is now Apple TV. The rename is real, the rollout isn’t.
Apple says the streaming service formerly known as Apple TV+ will now just be called Apple TV. The reveal was tucked into the last line of a press release about the F1 movie’s streaming date. Short and sweet. No keynote. No montage.
What Apple Actually Said
In Apple’s words, the service is “simply Apple TV” with a “vibrant new identity.” That’s it. No breakdown of what the new identity includes, no brand book, no logo sheet. Just a promise that a refresh is coming.
“Apple TV+ is now simply Apple TV, with a vibrant new identity. Ahead of its global streaming debut on Apple TV, the film continues to be available for purchase on participating digital platforms, including the Apple TV app, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home and more.”
What’s Changed Today
Basically nothing you can touch. As of right now, the website still says Apple TV+. The apps still say Apple TV+. The rename is official in text, but not live in the places you use it.
Why This Name Gets Confusing
Apple already sells a box called Apple TV. It also has the Apple TV app, which bundles channels, store purchases, and third-party integrations. Dropping the plus makes the streaming brand cleaner on paper, but it also puts three different things under one name. That could be tidy marketing or fresh confusion, depending on how Apple rolls it out.
Why Drop the Plus
The plus was never doing Apple any favors. It implied a base tier that didn’t exist, unlike Apple News and Apple News+, or iCloud and iCloud+. Removing it gives Apple a single, simple label for its shows and movies. If the company wants Apple TV to be the umbrella for hardware, app, and service, this is step one.
What to Watch for Next
- New wordmark and logo across the site and apps
- Updated app taxonomy to separate device, app, and service more clearly
- How Apple names bundles, channels, and store purchases inside the Apple TV app after the change
Wi-Fi Planet take
I’m not sold yet. Apple TV+ wasn’t thrilling as a name, but at least it was distinct. Calling the service Apple TV risks blurring the line between the box, the app, and the subscription. If Apple follows through with a smart design system and clear labels, this could work. If not, we’ll be explaining “which Apple TV” to our families for another five years.
For now, consider this a paper rename. The brand work will matter only when it hits your home screen.
