Buried in the release notes for the iOS 27 beta 2, Apple has confirmed it is getting ready to yank the AirPort Utility app from the App Store. The app is no longer fully supported on iOS 27, and Apple is being very upfront about the fact that it might just stop working.
Here is the short version. Once this lands, you will not be able to grab AirPort Utility as a fresh download from the App Store anymore. If you had it installed at some point in the past, you can still re-download it, so it is not vanishing into thin air for everyone. But Apple is slapping a big asterisk on it: run it on iOS 27 or later and there are no promises it actually does anything useful.
It is the same story over on the Mac. Apple plans to strip AirPort Utility out of new macOS installs, although if it is already sitting on your machine it will stick around after you update. And just like on iPhone, Apple is not guaranteeing it works on macOS Golden Gate, which is the macOS 27 release.

For anyone who has never touched one, AirPort Utility is the little app that lets you set up and manage Apple’s old AirPort base stations. That is the AirPort Extreme, the AirPort Express, and the AirPort Time Capsule. The thing is, Apple actually killed off the AirPort router line all the way back in 2018. It just kept the app alive so existing owners could still poke around in their settings. So this is less a sudden death and more the final, very gentle pulling of the plug.
The Time Capsule takes another hit
There is a second blow landing at the same time, and it is arguably the bigger one. With macOS Golden Gate, Apple is dropping support for AFP, the old Apple Filing Protocol. In plain English, that means Time Machine on your Mac will no longer back up to an AirPort Time Capsule. If that little white tower has been quietly catching your backups for the last decade, that arrangement is about to end.

Put it all together and the message is pretty hard to miss. Time Capsule backups are going away, the management app is being shown the door, and Apple clearly has zero interest in shipping any more updates for people clinging to their AirPort gear.
If that is you, nothing breaks the moment you update, so do not panic and rip everything out of the wall tonight. But this is your cue to start thinking about what comes next, whether that is a modern mesh system or a proper network attached storage box for your backups. The AirPort era had a good run.
