If you’re part of the AirPods beta program, there’s a new firmware update waiting, and it brings some seriously cool iOS 26 features with it.
Apple has officially released a fresh firmware build for AirPods Pro 2 and the upcoming AirPods 4, giving beta testers an early taste of what’s coming later this year. The new version is 8A5324b, replacing the previous 8A5308b build that launched earlier this month.
What’s New in the Latest AirPods Firmware?
This new firmware introduces five standout iOS 26 features, and most of them go beyond simple bug fixes or tweaks. Here’s what’s rolling out:
- Auto pause when you fall asleep
Your AirPods can now detect when you’ve dozed off and stop playback automatically. - Studio-quality audio recording
This adds pro-level audio capture for video or voice memos recorded with your AirPods. - Camera remote
Use your AirPods to remotely trigger your iPhone camera. Perfect for group shots or hands-free recording. - Smarter CarPlay switching
AirPods now switch more intelligently between devices when you enter or leave your car. - Improved voice quality on calls
Calls should sound noticeably clearer with upgraded voice processing.
These features are currently limited to AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, but expect at least a few of them to roll out to other models down the line.
Beta Firmware Is Easier Than Ever
For the first time, Apple is offering a public beta for AirPods firmware. That means you no longer need to be a developer to test new features. The install process is smoother than it’s ever been, and you can opt in directly through your iPhone if you’re running the latest iOS 26 beta.
