Apple Gift Card Tricks That Still Work in 2026

A gift card does not lose value while it sits in your Apple Account. You do. The longer a balance goes unspent, the better the odds it ends up as a $59 case you never wanted, and at that point the card has stopped saving you money and started spending it for you.

There are better uses. A couple of them are worth planning around rather than stumbling into.

Buy Them at a Discount Somewhere Else

Apple sells gift cards at face value forever. Supermarkets and warehouse clubs do not.

Grocery chains run periodic promotions on third-party gift cards, sometimes as a straight percentage off, more often as loyalty points or a money-off voucher attached to the purchase. A card bought at 10% under face value is a 10% discount on Apple hardware, which is otherwise close to impossible to get. Warehouse clubs in the US have been selling Apple credit slightly under face for years.

The saving is modest in isolation. What makes it interesting is that it applies to a product Apple otherwise never discounts.

These promotions cluster in the run-up to Christmas. Buying $1,000 of Apple credit at 8% off in December and spending it on a Mac in March is one of the few genuine arbitrages left.

Stack Them Without Limit

You can redeem as many gift cards into your Apple Account as you like, and the balance simply accumulates. There is no cap on the total and no restriction on combining a balance with a card at the checkout.

So a drawer full of small cards from birthdays and promotions can become a real contribution towards a machine. Redeem them all first and then buy, rather than trying to juggle several cards at the point of sale.

Balances do not expire in most markets. Local law varies, so check yours.

Let It Pay Your Subscriptions

This is the most useful thing on the list and the one people miss. Your Apple Account balance is drawn down automatically before your card is charged, for anything Apple bills you for directly: iCloud storage, Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Arcade, App Store purchases, in-app subscriptions, all of it.

Which means a $150 Back to School card you cannot find a use for is roughly a year of Apple Music, or comfortably more than a year of a mid-tier iCloud plan, paid up front and invisible from then on. The money goes somewhere you were spending it anyway, and you stop thinking about it.

Put It Towards AppleCare

Gift card balance covers AppleCare+ and AppleCare One in most markets, which turns a promotional card into insurance rather than an accessory.

AppleCare+ for an iPhone Pro runs $139.99 a year, so a $150 card covers the year outright with change left over. If AppleCare was already on your list, this is the highest-value use of a card there is, because you are converting credit you were given into something you were about to pay real money for.

It Stacks With Trade-In and Education Pricing

Gift card balance, trade-in credit and education pricing all stack, and nothing in Apple’s terms stops you applying all three to a single purchase. A student buying a MacBook Pro can take the education discount, spend a Back to School card, and put a trade-in on top. Each mechanism is assessed separately, and the combined total can be substantial.

Get your trade-in quote sorted before you start, though. Trade-in adds screens to the checkout and slows the whole thing down, which matters on a launch day and does not on a quiet Tuesday.

The Ones That Do Not Work

Cards are region-locked. A US gift card will not redeem into a UK Apple Account, and changing your billing country does not fix it. Buying cheap Apple credit abroad to spend at home has never worked and still does not.

You cannot convert a balance back into cash either. Apple credit is a one-way door, and the sites offering to buy your balance off you are not doing you a favour.

Nor can you buy gift cards using gift card balance. The obvious loophole is closed.

If Someone Asks to Be Paid in Gift Cards, It Is a Scam

Every time, without exception.

Not tax authorities. Not utility companies. Not the police, not your bank, not a family member texting you from a new number. If anyone has directed you to a shop to buy gift cards and read the numbers back to them, that is the entire scam, and it works precisely because the credit becomes untraceable the moment those codes leave your mouth.

It is still one of the most common consumer frauds running, and the people it catches are not foolish. They are rushed, frightened, and being talked at by someone who sounds official.

The Practical Order

Cover AppleCare, if you were buying it anyway. Then a year of iCloud or Apple Music. Then put whatever is left towards hardware you had already decided on.

Visit the accessories page last, or ideally not at all.

And if you are a student with a Back to School card landing before 27 August, work out what it is for before it arrives.
