Apple switched on its 2026 Back to School promotion this week. If you have been refreshing the US education store since Bloomberg said the deal was landing mid-week, stop. It went live in Asia first, and the US, Canada and Europe are still waiting.
Eight countries have it: China, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. College students and teaching staff who buy a qualifying Mac or iPad get a free item on top, and after weeks of guessing, the terms are public.
What You Actually Get
The gift depends on where you shop.
China, Singapore and Vietnam get a four-pack of AirTags with any new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air or iPad Pro bought through Apple’s education store.
India gets a choice. Four AirTags or AirPods 4 with a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, or an Apple Pencil Pro with an iPad Air or iPad Pro.
Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand get an Apple gift card.
You can also swap the freebie for money off a pricier accessory, which is the smarter move if the free item is something you would never open. Four AirTags is a lot of AirTags.
The MacBook Neo Is Locked Out
The MacBook Neo does not qualify in any of the eight countries. Neither does the iPad mini, the entry-level iPad, or any desktop Mac.
Apple raised Mac and iPad prices in June after memory costs jumped, then built a student promotion that shuts out its cheapest laptop and its cheapest tablet. The A18 Pro Neo is the machine Apple designed for the buyer counting every note, and it is the one machine the student deal ignores. If you planned to pair a Neo with a free gift, that plan is dead.
Does This Tell Us Anything About the US Deal?
Less than you would hope. Apple writes different terms for different regions every year, and the Asia offer has never been a dependable guide to what lands in North America. A gift card in Malaysia tells you close to nothing about what a student in Ohio walks away with.
It is still the first hard evidence since the offer started running late, and it does not smell like generosity. We asked whether Apple would go bigger this year to take the sting out of the price rises. AirTags and a gift card look like the usual playbook, rerun at higher hardware prices. A like-for-like deal in a year when Macs cost more is a deal worth less.
Apple might be saving something better for its biggest markets. I would not bank on it.
The Clock Is Shorter Than Usual
The Asia promotion runs to 27 August. North America normally gets until the end of September, so do not assume that date travels with the offer.
Should You Wait?
In the US, Canada or Europe, give it a few more days. Apple has shipped promotional material to its retail stores and has now switched on an entire region, so the rest is close. Buying a MacBook Air on Thursday and watching the free AirPods land on Friday would be a miserable way to save nothing.
In one of the eight countries, check your model qualifies before you pay. The exclusion list is doing more work this year than the gift is.
