Google is kicking off 2026 with its first meaningful Android update of the year, and while it is officially framed as a January security patch, this one is doing a lot more than just ticking a box.

The Android 16 QPR2 January update is now rolling out to a wide range of Pixel devices, from the Pixel 7a all the way up to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. And if you own a Pixel 10-series phone, this update is especially worth paying attention to.

Pixel 10 Gets Targeted GPU and Display Fixes

Google is clearly focusing its attention on the Pixel 10 lineup this month.

The update includes multiple Display and Graphics fixes that apply only to the Pixel 10 family, suggesting Google is still fine-tuning the newest hardware.

For Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the update delivers:

  • General improvements to GPU performance in certain conditions
  • A fix for noisy lines flashing on screen when editing HDR photos in Adobe Lightroom
  • A fix for always-on display flickering
  • A fix for the touchscreen randomly stopping input under certain conditions

Taken together, this looks less like routine maintenance and more like Google smoothing out early-generation quirks on its latest phones.

Battery Drain Fix Lands on Pixel 8 and Newer

There is good news for more people, too.

Owners of the Pixel 8 series and newer devices are getting a fix for battery draining in certain conditions. Google does not spell out exactly what those conditions are, but Pixel battery complaints have been a recurring theme over the past year, especially after major platform updates.

This suggests Google has identified at least one underlying issue and pushed out a system-level fix rather than another background tuning tweak.

Smaller Fixes, But Still Welcome

Beyond performance and battery changes, the January update also cleans up a handful of annoying bugs.

These include:

  • A fix for noisy ringback tones during Webex calls
  • A fix for an issue where deleting a Live Universe wallpaper could break the Wallpaper and Style app until a reboot

They are not headline features, but they are the kind of paper cuts that quietly add up over time.

Just One Security Issue This Month

Interestingly, Google lists only a single security vulnerability resolved in the January 2026 patch, dated January 5.

That is unusually light for a monthly update, which may explain why Google bundled more platform-level fixes into this release instead of shipping a purely security-focused patch.

Devices Receiving The Update

The rollout is extensive and includes:

  • Pixel 7a
  • Pixel Tablet
  • Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9a
  • Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold

Build numbers vary slightly by region, including Global, EMEA, Japan, and Verizon-specific variants, but all are based on the same Android 16 QPR2 foundation.

The Pixel Update Gap is Still Frustrating Users

As usual, the update rollout has also reignited frustration among Pixel fans, particularly around which devices are included and which are not.

Some users are questioning why certain models receive updates while closely related ones are left out, pointing to a lack of clear communication from Google about its update strategy. It is not a new complaint, but each rollout seems to bring it back into focus.

A Quiet But Important January Update

This is not a flashy release packed with new features, but it is a meaningful one. Google is clearly prioritising stability, performance, and cleanup, especially on its newest Pixel hardware.

If you are running a Pixel 10, this update should make your phone feel a little more polished. And if you are on a Pixel 8 or newer, the battery fix alone could make it worth installing as soon as it lands.
