American Airlines is finally joining the growing list of carriers offering free Wi-Fi—sort of.
Starting in 2026, most American Airlines flights will include complimentary in-flight internet access for passengers enrolled in the airline’s AAdvantage loyalty program. The service, sponsored by AT&T, will be available on aircraft equipped with Intelsat and Viasat satellite Wi-Fi—expected to cover about 90% of the fleet by next year.
That means: if you’re an AAdvantage member (it’s free to join), you’ll soon be able to stream, scroll, and work at 35,000 feet—without paying the $20+ fee American typically charges for Wi-Fi access.
📶 Who’s Eligible?
Only AAdvantage members will get free access, so if you’re not already signed up, now’s the time. Passengers who aren’t members will likely still need to pay for internet access.
🛰 What Planes Will Have It?
The free service will be available on domestic narrow-body jets outfitted with Viasat and Intelsat satellite systems. However, older Boeing wide-body aircraft—often used on international routes—won’t be included in the free Wi-Fi rollout, at least initially.
American is also investing in connectivity for regional routes, with plans to install high-speed internet on 500 smaller regional aircraft by the end of next year.
🛫 How Does It Compare?
American is the latest major U.S. airline to make this move. JetBlue has offered free in-flight Wi-Fi for years, while Delta began rolling it out to SkyMiles members in 2023. United Airlines is currently outfitting its fleet with SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi, aiming for free access across the board via its MileagePlus loyalty program.
Southwest Airlines remains one of the few major U.S. carriers still charging for onboard internet, with no free service announced yet.
💬 The Bottom Line
If you’re flying with American in 2026 and you’re not an AAdvantage member, you’re missing out. Free Wi-Fi is becoming the new standard—and airlines are betting that keeping you connected keeps you loyal.
