Amazon has asked the FCC for permission to launch 5,105 satellites. The number is not the story.
Buried in the filing is the part that should interest anyone who owns an iPhone: Amazon is buying the company whose spectrum currently carries Apple’s satellite features, and the constellation it wants to build will take over the job. Emergency SOS, satellite Messages, Find My and Roadside Assistance all run on infrastructure Apple does not own, and the landlord is changing.
What Amazon Has Filed For
The constellation is called Amazon Leo, and the application covers 5,105 satellites in low Earth orbit.
They would fly in five orbital shells. Three concentrate on heavily populated regions, where demand is, and two reach towards the poles, which is where terrestrial networks give up entirely. Low Earth orbit matters for a phone: the satellites are close enough that a handset with a modest antenna can reach them without the delay you get bouncing a signal off something in geostationary orbit 36,000km up.
The FCC has not ruled yet. Deployment is slated to begin in 2028.
Apple Is Already Signed Up
This is not speculation about a future partnership. Amazon states plainly that it has an agreement with Apple to power satellite services on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models, and to work with Apple on future services across the expanded network.
The mechanism is the Globalstar acquisition. Apple’s satellite features have run on Globalstar spectrum since Emergency SOS launched, and Amazon is buying Globalstar outright, with the merger expected to close in 2027 subject to regulators. Globalstar and Amazon Leo would then operate together underneath Apple’s features.
So the sequence runs: Amazon buys the network Apple depends on in 2027, then starts launching a much larger one in 2028.

The honest summary is that nothing you do changes, and everything underneath it gets faster. Satellite messaging today is a deliberate exercise in patience: you point the phone at the sky, hold it steady, and wait while a handful of words crawl upward. More satellites with more capacity turns that from an emergency-only capability into something closer to a slow but usable connection.
Amazon also describes satellite-based cellular service for areas with no tower coverage, aimed at any device carrying a compatible chipset. That is the more interesting long game, and it is not confined to Apple.
Apple Builds Its Own Modems and Rents Its Own Sky
There is a strategic oddity here worth sitting with.
Apple spent years and a fortune building an in-house cellular modem rather than depending on Qualcomm, a project that ran long past every predicted deadline and eventually produced the C1 and its successors. The stated logic was control: Apple does not want a critical component of the iPhone sitting in someone else’s roadmap.
Then it took the opposite decision one layer up. The satellites carrying its emergency service belong to somebody else, and after 2027 that somebody is Amazon, which competes with Apple in speakers, streaming, tablets and services.
The economics explain it. A constellation costs billions, needs orbital slots and spectrum rights, requires regulatory approval in every market, and has to be replaced every few years as satellites deorbit. Even Apple looks at that and decides to buy capacity rather than own the asset. Amazon is already spending the money for its own reasons, which makes it a supplier rather than a rival in this one narrow lane.
It still leaves Apple’s most safety-critical feature running on a competitor’s hardware, with the contract terms nobody outside the two companies has seen.
The Ground Story Nobody Mentions
Satellite coverage sounds like it solves the notspot problem. It solves a narrower version of it.
Satellite links need line of sight to the sky, which rules out the places most people actually lose signal: inside buildings, in basements, on the Underground, in a steel-framed office, halfway up a multi-storey car park. A constellation of five thousand satellites does nothing for a phone with a roof over it. The problem it fixes is the moor, the coastline, the mountain pass and the long stretch of road with nothing on it, which is exactly where an emergency service earns its keep.
Worth understanding the difference before you assume satellite connectivity makes your home broadband or your patchy office signal irrelevant. It does not. For that, the answer is still the boring one: a decent router, sensible placement, and a Wi-Fi calling setting switched on.

Which Devices Get It
Satellite features need hardware support, so this is not a software update that reaches every iPhone.
Current satellite capability sits in recent iPhones and the Apple Watch Ultra 3, which gained satellite connectivity as one of its headline upgrades. Anything Amazon enables from 2028 will require chipsets that support the new network, so a phone bought today may reach the end of its life before the expanded service is fully live.
Anyone weighing up this autumn’s Apple Watch models should treat satellite as a feature that exists now and improves later, rather than a reason to wait.
The Dates to Watch
Three checkpoints stand between the filing and anything reaching your pocket.
The FCC has to approve the system, and the timing of that decision is out of Amazon’s hands. The Globalstar merger has to clear regulators to close in 2027, which is the step that actually transfers Apple’s existing satellite plumbing. Then deployment starts in 2028, and constellations fill out over years rather than months.
