AirPods Pro 3 in 2026: Still the Buy, or Wait for the Next One?

How AirPods Pro 3 Supply Issues Shaped Apple’s Wearables Revenue in Q1 2026

Buy them. The next AirPods Pro are probably two years away, and the thing Apple is working on for 2027 is a different product with a different purpose.

That is the whole answer, but the reasoning matters because AirPods Pro sit on a longer refresh cycle than anything else Apple sells, and people apply iPhone logic to them. iPhone logic says never buy in August. AirPods logic says August is fine, because the calendar is completely different.

The Refresh Cycle Is Three Years, Not One

ModelReleasedGap
AirPods ProOctober 2019
AirPods Pro 2September 20223 years
AirPods Pro 3September 20253 years

Two data points make a pattern rather than a law, but it is a consistent one, and Apple has shown no sign of moving AirPods Pro onto an annual cycle. Extrapolate and AirPods Pro 4 lands somewhere in late 2028.

The AirPods Pro 3 shipped on 19 September 2025 at $249. In August 2026 they are eleven months old, which on a three-year cycle makes them early-middle-aged rather than end-of-life. Waiting means waiting a long time.

What You Get for $249

The generation-three changes were substantial, which is what happens when a product waits three years between updates.

  • The H3 chip, which drives both the audio processing and roughly double the noise cancellation of the AirPods Pro 2.
  • A heart rate sensor. A photoplethysmography sensor in each bud tracks your heart rate during workouts and reports into the Fitness app.
  • Lossless audio support, a first for AirPods.
  • Eight hours of listening with noise cancellation on, ten in transparency mode.
  • Live Translation, which does what it says and works better than it has any right to.

The heart rate sensor is the one people underrate. For anyone who runs or lifts without wearing a Watch, it removes the reason to wear one, and it turns a pair of earbuds into a fitness device without adding anything to your wrist.

What Apple Is Building Next Is Not AirPods Pro 4

The interesting AirPods reporting for 2027 is about AirPods with cameras built in, feeding infrared sensors into Apple’s spatial and AI features rather than improving how music sounds.

That is a different product aimed at a different problem. If it ships, it will sit alongside the AirPods Pro line rather than replacing it, in the same way the AirPods Max sits alongside without competing. Holding off on a $249 purchase in 2026 to wait for camera-equipped earbuds in 2027 means going two years without decent earbuds for a device that might not suit you at all.

The Case Against Buying

Two situations where waiting or skipping makes sense.

You already own AirPods Pro 2 and they work. The noise cancellation is better on the 3 and the heart rate sensor is new, and neither is worth $249 if your current pair holds a charge. AirPods Pro 2 still receive firmware updates and picked up several features through software after launch.

You care mainly about sound quality per pound. $249 buys considerably better-sounding wired or wireless headphones from Sony, Sennheiser or Technics. What it does not buy is the integration: instant pairing, automatic switching between your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Find My. People buy AirPods for the ecosystem behaviour and then argue about the sound, which is the wrong argument.

The Battery Problem Nobody Mentions at Purchase

AirPods have tiny batteries that go through a full charge cycle almost every day. After two to three years of daily use, an eight-hour listening time becomes three or four hours, and there is no user-replaceable cell.

Apple charges a battery service fee per bud, which on a pair approaches half the price of new ones. Plan for AirPods Pro as a three-year purchase rather than a five-year one, and price them accordingly. Roughly $80 a year is the honest number.

If that annoys you, the EU is forcing the issue on replaceable batteries in accessories, and Apple has already begun redesigning around the 2027 deadline. AirPods are an obvious candidate for the same treatment, which is a genuine argument for a later purchase if you can wait that long.

When to Actually Press Buy

Apple does not discount AirPods. Retailers do, and the price on AirPods Pro 3 has drifted below list at third-party sellers through 2026. The deepest discounts land in late November, and a smaller dip usually appears around the September event when attention moves to new hardware.

If you need them now, buy now. If you can wait eight weeks, wait for the launch-window discounts. Waiting two years for AirPods Pro 4 is not a plan, it is a way of using bad earbuds until 2028.

Nothing in the expected September lineup suggests new AirPods Pro this year, which makes this one of the few Apple purchases that is safe to make in August.
